The autumn moon as seen from Amanosan Kongoji Temple
Said to have been established by the priest Gyoki, this temple was visited by Kobo Daishi who trained himself in esoteric Buddhism here.It is also known as "Nyonin Koya" and "Amano Angu". Many of the temple buildings, and the treasures held within, are national treasures or important cultural properties, especially the must-see temple garden constructed in the Muromachi Period (1392-1573AD). The transition of the four seasons here, especially the transformation of the trees and flowers is deeply aesthetic, with cherry blossoms in spring and golden leaves in autumn. It is largely famous for its ethereal views of the harvest moon from the temple's viewing deck in mid-autumn.
